The Story of Senait
When I was 14, my father was sent to Eritrea due to the Ethio-Eritrean war.
Since he left, my already poor family really started to suffer. We had to live
on 3 Birrs a day (23 pence). We could not survive.
As the eldest daughter in the family, I felt I had a duty to help the family.
The fastest way to earn money was to get involved in sex work. There is a big
demand from tourists and locals. I hated it, but I could earn 15-20 Birrs a day.
My family could at least survive.
I was a sex worker for 4 years. I had many problems, such as physical and sexual
abuse, repeated illness, mental disturbance, neglect by the community,
frustration and loss of self respect.
In one way, I have been lucky. I met someone from Children’s Aid – Ethiopia (CHADET),
a local project supported by ChildHope. I joined their programme. They offer me
counselling, ecuational support, medical care and training in new job skills as
well as simply a safe place to eat and wash. Now I am old enough, I have been
enrolled for training in driving. In 4 months I will get a 2nd level driving
license, so I can get a job as a driver and not have to go on the streets
anymore.
HIV/AIDS is spreading fast in Ethiopia and I am lucky to be alive. Now, I have
so much catching up to do – in school amd in life.
Thanks to ChildHope and CHAD-ET, I have a chance and am positive for my future.Source
